Navien Boiler Error Codes — Complete BC Reference
Authoritative reference for Navien NCB-E, NCB-H, NFB, and NHB boiler error codes. What each E-prefix code means, common causes, and when to call a technician.
Understanding Navien's E-Prefix Code System
Navien boilers — including the NCB-E, NCB-H, NFB, and NHB series — use a self-diagnostic system that displays E-prefix fault codeson the unit's front LED panel when the boiler detects an abnormal operating condition. These codes range from E001 (no gas supply) through to E119 (low water pressure) and beyond.
When an E-code appears, the boiler either continues to operate in a degraded mode (for advisory-level faults) or locks out completely (for safety-critical faults). Understanding which category your code falls into helps you decide whether to attempt a reset, check for obvious physical causes, or call a technician immediately.
Important: Navien allows one manual reset per lockout event. If the same E-code reappears after resetting, do not continue resetting — repeated ignition attempts or repeated resets on pressure or temperature faults can cause secondary damage. Call a Red Seal–certified technician.
If you smell gas at any point, do not reset the boiler. Leave the building, leave doors open, and call FortisBC's gas emergency line: 1-800-663-9911. Only return and call a technician once the gas utility has confirmed the area is safe.
Navien Error Code Reference Table
Covering NCB-E, NCB-H, NFB, and NHB series. Code descriptions may vary slightly by firmware version.
| Code | Name | Meaning | Common Cause | DIY Check? | Urgency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E001 | No Gas Supply | No gas pressure detected at the gas valve inlet. | Gas meter off, supply valve closed, or main gas service interruption. | Yes — check that the gas supply valve is open and verify other gas appliances are working. | Moderate |
| E003 | Ignition Failure | The boiler attempted ignition three times and failed to establish a flame. | Failed igniter electrode, dirty flame sensor, low gas pressure, or faulty gas valve. | Partial — check gas supply and reset once. Repeat lockout requires a technician. | High |
| E006 | Flame Loss During Operation | The boiler lit but flame dropped out mid-cycle. | Fluctuating gas pressure, deteriorating gas valve, or debris in combustion chamber. | No — single reset permitted, but root cause requires technician diagnosis. | High |
| E010 | Overheat | Water temperature exceeded the maximum safety threshold. | Restricted flow, failed circulator, air-locked loop, or thermostat runaway. | No — reset will clear, but returning to service without diagnosis risks heat exchanger cracking. | High |
| E012 | High Gas Pressure | Gas pressure at the valve inlet is above the rated operating range. | Gas regulator fault at the meter, or incorrect supply pressure from the utility. | No — requires gas pressure measurement with calibrated equipment. | High |
| E016 | Too Hot (High Limit) | The unit exceeded its upper operating temperature and the safety limit tripped. | Low system flow, seized pump, stuck-closed zone valves, or thermostat set too high. | No — identify and correct flow restriction before resetting. | High |
| E030 | Exhaust Temperature High | The flue gas temperature exceeds the normal operating range at the exhaust. | Blocked condensate drain, heat exchanger scale reducing thermal transfer, or combustion tuning drift. | No — requires combustion analysis and inspection. | Moderate |
| E047 | Return Temperature Sensor Fault | The return water temperature sensor is reading out of range. | Sensor failure, wiring fault, or actual extreme return temperature from an oversized system. | No — sensor or wiring diagnosis required. | Moderate |
| E050 | Air Pressure Switch Fault | The air pressure differential switch did not close during the pre-purge cycle. | Blocked intake or exhaust, failed combustion blower, or faulty pressure switch. | Partial — inspect intake and exhaust terminations for blockage. Technician required if clear. | High |
| E100 | Flow Sensor Fault | The domestic hot water or system flow sensor is reading outside the expected range. | Fouled flow sensor paddle, debris blockage, or sensor failure. | No — sensor removal and inspection required. | Moderate |
| E110 | Water Temperature Sensor Fault | The outlet water temperature sensor is reading abnormally. | Sensor failure, or restricted flow causing actual abnormal temperatures. | No — requires technician to distinguish between sensor fault and actual temperature issue. | Moderate to High |
| E119 | Low Water Pressure | System pressure has dropped below the minimum operating threshold. | Slow system leak, failed expansion tank, or auto-fill valve malfunction. | Partial — check pressure gauge and add water via fill valve if accessible. Technician needed for root cause. | Moderate |
