Boiler Lockout: What It Means & How to Reset It Safely
A boiler lockout is the system protecting itself — it has detected a fault and shut down to prevent further damage. Here's what it means and your next steps.
What Is Boiler Lockout?
Boiler lockout is a safety state where the boiler's control board has detected an abnormal condition and has shut the unit down to prevent damage or a safety hazard. The boiler will typically display a fault code on its digital screen (E010, E003, EA, etc.) or flash a series of LED indicators, depending on the brand and model.
A lockout is the boiler's equivalent of a circuit breaker tripping — it means something triggered a safety threshold. The lockout itself is not the problem; it's a symptom. The problem is whatever caused the lockout. This is an important distinction: resetting a lockout without addressing the root cause is like repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker without investigating why it tripped.
Most modern boilers allow a manual reset. Many will attempt 2–3 automatic restart cycles before entering a hard lockout that requires manual intervention.
How to Reset a Boiler Lockout
A single manual reset is appropriate when the boiler has locked out for the first time with no obvious cause (no gas smell, no water leak, no CO alarm). Here's the process:
- 1.Note the fault code displayed — photograph it if you can. This code will help the technician if the boiler doesn't stay running after the reset.
- 2.Wait 5 minutes with the boiler in lockout state before attempting a reset — this allows the control board to fully cycle through its safety routines.
- 3.Press and hold the reset button (usually marked with a flame symbol and arrow, or labelled "Reset") for 3–5 seconds until the boiler begins its startup sequence.
- 4.Observe the boiler through one full heating cycle. Does it run normally? Does it lock out again? If it runs, monitor over the next 24 hours.
- 5.If the boiler locks out again within 1–2 cycles, do not keep resetting. The fault is real and recurring — book a service call.
When NOT to Reset: Evacuate or Call Immediately
Do not attempt a reset if any of the following are present:
- You smell gas — leave the building, don't operate switches, call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 and 911 from outside
- Your CO alarm is sounding — evacuate immediately, call 911. CO lockout codes on Navien (E012) and Viessmann units can indicate combustion gas entering the living space.
- There's visible water leaking from or near the boiler, especially near gas connections or electrical components
- The boiler has locked out 3+ times in the same day — this indicates a persistent fault that resetting will not resolve
Most Common Lockout Causes by Symptom
Ignition Failure Lockout
Common codes: Navien E010, Viessmann F4, IBC F-02. The boiler attempted to ignite and failed. Causes include a failed igniter, blocked burner orifice, low gas supply pressure, or a faulty gas valve. Three failed ignition attempts typically trigger a hard lockout.
Overtemperature Lockout
The boiler's water exceeded the high-limit temperature (usually 90–95°C). Causes: blocked flue, pump failure, very low flow through a nearly closed zone valve, or a faulty high-limit sensor. This is often the lockout type associated with short cycling.
Low Pressure Lockout
System pressure dropped below the minimum threshold (typically 0.4–0.5 bar). See our boiler pressure guide. After repressurising, check for the source of the pressure loss before the next reset.
Condensate / Flue Pressure Lockout
Common in BC winters. A blocked or frozen condensate pipe prevents drainage. On cold-weather lockouts, check the condensate pipe for ice before calling a technician — thawing it with warm water may be all that's needed.
Flame Sensor / Ionisation Fault
The boiler lit but the flame sensor couldn't confirm the flame — a safety measure to prevent unburned gas accumulation. A dirty or oxidised flame sensor rod is a common annual maintenance item. If this code appears repeatedly, a technician visit is needed.
Our technicians carry diagnostic laptops compatible with Navien, IBC, Viessmann, and Rinnai protocols — allowing us to read the boiler's internal fault history and pinpoint why the lockout occurred, not just reset it. This means faster, more permanent fixes.
