About Navien Boilers

Navien is a South Korean brand that has grown to become one of the most recognized names in high-efficiency condensing boilers and combination water heaters across North America. Founded in 1978, Navien entered the Canadian market with products engineered for the cold-climate demands of provinces like British Columbia, where heating reliability is critical from October through April.

The most popular Navien boiler series in BC are the NCB-E (combination boiler with domestic hot water), the NCB-H (space-heating only), and the NFB (floor-standing, high-output). The NPE series covers their tankless water heater/combi units. Navien boilers typically run at 95–98% AFUE efficiency, making them a popular choice for energy-conscious Metro Vancouver homeowners and strata buildings.

One practical advantage in Greater Vancouver is Navien's strong BC distribution network. Parts for NCB and NFB models are generally available same-day from local distributors, which keeps repair windows short when a technician carries the right diagnostic tools.

Common Navien Repair Issues in Metro Vancouver

Navien's self-diagnostic system displays an E-prefix error code on the front display when a fault is detected. Here are the five faults our technicians diagnose most often on Greater Vancouver Navien installations:

  • E003 — Ignition Failure:The unit attempts ignition three times and locks out. Common causes include a faulty igniter, low gas pressure at the meter, a blocked gas valve, or a dirty flame sensor. In Vancouver's damp winters, condensation can coat the igniter electrode and prevent reliable spark. This is our single most frequent Navien service call.
  • E012 — Flame Loss During Operation: The boiler lights but the flame drops out mid-cycle. Possible causes: fluctuating gas supply pressure, a deteriorating gas valve, or debris in the combustion chamber. Left unaddressed, this fault creates short-cycling that accelerates heat exchanger wear.
  • E110 — Water Temperature Sensor Fault: The outlet water temperature sensor is reading out of range. Sometimes the sensor itself has failed; other times the fault is caused by restricted flow through the primary loop — check for closed zone valves or a failing circulator before replacing the sensor.
  • E016 — Overheating (High Limit Trip): The boiler has reached an unsafe temperature and shut down. Typically caused by a blocked or air-locked heat exchanger, a seized circulator pump, or a thermostat calling for excessive output. Requires same-day attention to prevent secondary heat exchanger damage.
  • Control Board Faults: Older NCB-E units (pre-2018) can develop PCB issues that cause erratic error codes, display failures, or intermittent lockouts not associated with a single sensor. We carry common Navien PCB replacements in stock for faster turnaround.

Our Navien Service Credentials

GasBoilers.ca is a CanroHeat Division operating out of Burnaby, BC. Every technician on our team holds a Red Seal (Interprovincial) Gas Fitter certification— the highest credentialing standard in Canada for gas appliance work. We have completed manufacturer-specific training on Navien's NCB, NFB, and NPE platforms, including Navien's proprietary NaviCirc primary-secondary loop configurations.

We carry Navien OEM parts on our service trucks — igniter assemblies, flame sensors, gas valves, circulator pump cartridges, and PCB modules. For most E003, E012, and E110 faults, we can diagnose and complete the repair in a single visit without waiting on parts delivery.

Navien Repair Cost in BC

We charge a flat diagnostic feeto attend the job and identify the fault — this covers our technician's travel to Greater Vancouver addresses and a full systems check. If you proceed with the repair, the diagnostic fee is credited toward the total.

Common Navien repair cost ranges in BC: igniter or flame sensor replacement typically runs $180–$320 CAD including parts and labour. A gas valve replacement (E003/E012 root cause) ranges from $380–$580 CAD. Heat exchanger descaling (E016 prevention) runs $220–$350 CAD. PCB replacements are $450–$750 CAD depending on model year. All prices are subject to our final on-site quote.
