Weil-McLain Boiler Repair in Metro Vancouver
Certified service for Weil-McLain Ultra and CGi series boilers. Ignition lockout, low water pressure faults, LWCO trips, and heat exchanger scaling diagnosed and repaired.
About Weil-McLain Boilers
Weil-McLain is one of North America's oldest and most established boiler manufacturers, with a history stretching back to 1881. Headquartered in the United States, the brand has a particularly strong presence in commercial, institutional, and older residential hydronic heating systems across Canada. In Metro Vancouver, Weil-McLain units are most frequently encountered in commercial buildings, schools, older apartment buildings, and heritage homes that were converted from oil heating to natural gas.
The Weil-McLain Ultra Series represents their condensing residential lineup, offering modulating burners and efficiencies up to 95% AFUE. The CGi Series (cast-iron gas-fired) is a non-condensing atmospheric design still found in many older Vancouver commercial installations and some residential properties where venting constraints preclude a condensing unit. The AquaBalance line handles combination heating and DHW.
Weil-McLain's cast-iron CGi boilers are known for exceptional longevity — some Metro Vancouver installations are still operational after 30–40 years. However, servicing these older units requires different skills and parts than condensing boiler service, and our technicians are experienced with both platforms.
Common Weil-McLain Repair Issues in Metro Vancouver
Weil-McLain's Ultra Series uses a diagnostic display code system. Older CGi units rely on physical inspection for fault diagnosis. Here are the most frequent repair scenarios we encounter on Weil-McLain units in Greater Vancouver:
- Ignition Lockout: The Ultra Series locks out after failed ignition attempts and displays a fault code. The CGi series simply fails to fire. Root causes differ by platform: on the Ultra, a failed igniter module or gas valve is most common; on CGi atmospheric units, pilot light issues, thermocouple failure, or standing pilot deterioration are frequent culprits. We service both electronic ignition and standing pilot configurations.
- Low Water Pressure Faults:The Ultra Series requires minimum system pressure to operate. A low-pressure lockout typically points to a leaking expansion tank bladder (the most common cause in Metro Vancouver systems that haven't been serviced recently), a slow leak at an air vent or union fitting, or a malfunctioning pressure-reducing valve that isn't maintaining fill pressure.
- LWCO (Low Water Cutoff) Trips: Commercial Weil-McLain installations commonly use low water cutoff devices as a safety interlock. In older commercial Vancouver buildings, corroded or fouled LWCO probes can trigger nuisance trips. We test, clean, and where necessary replace LWCO probes and controls as part of commercial Weil-McLain service.
- Heat Exchanger Scaling: The aluminium heat exchangers in Weil-McLain Ultra units are susceptible to limescale in harder-water zones. Scale accumulation reduces thermal transfer efficiency and can eventually cause cracking if left untreated. We recommend chemical descaling every 2–3 years for Ultra Series units in Surrey, Richmond, and Langley service areas.
Our Weil-McLain Service Credentials
Our Red Seal Gas Fitter–certified technicians have extensive experience with both the Weil-McLain Ultra condensing series and the cast-iron CGi/EG series. We are comfortable working in commercial mechanical rooms where Weil-McLain units are most common — including boiler plants in strata buildings, schools, and light commercial properties across Metro Vancouver.
We stock common Weil-McLain Ultra parts including pressure sensors, igniter assemblies, and circulator pump cartridges. CGi burner components and thermocouple sets are also carried on our trucks. For commercial components requiring lead time, we work with Weil-McLain's BC distributor network.
