Noritz Boiler Error Codes — BC Homeowner Reference
Complete Noritz E-prefix error code reference for NRCB series condensing combination boilers. Meaning, common causes, and service guidance for Metro Vancouver homeowners.
Understanding Noritz Error Codes
Noritz condensing boilers and combination units display E-prefix numeric fault codeson the unit's front panel LED display when the control system detects an abnormal operating condition. The code stays active on the display until the fault is resolved and the unit is reset.
Unlike some brands that use separate advisory and lockout code categories, Noritz E-codes are generally hard faults that lock out the boiler. The unit will not restart until the fault is cleared and a manual reset is performed. This is a safety design — the Noritz control system does not allow repeated restart attempts that could mask a dangerous condition.
Most Noritz faults in Metro Vancouver are related to combustion quality (E10), heat exchanger condition (E14, E64, E90), or flue system issues (E16). In areas of Greater Vancouver with harder water supply — particularly Surrey, Langley, and parts of Richmond — scale-related faults (E14, E64, E90) are more prevalent and reinforce the importance of annual descaling service.
If you detect gas odour when the boiler locks out, do not reset. Evacuate the space and call FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911. Only call a technician once the gas utility confirms the area is safe.
Noritz Error Code Reference Table
Covering Noritz NRCB condensing combination boiler series. Code descriptions may vary by model year and firmware version.
| Code | Name | Meaning | Common Cause | DIY Check? | Urgency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E10 | Abnormal Combustion | Combustion quality is outside normal parameters; the boiler has shut down. | Flue gas recirculation, blocked air intake, deteriorating gas valve, or dirty burner. | Partial — inspect the flue and air intake terminations for blockage. Do not continue resetting. | High |
| E14 | Overheat Shutdown | The boiler exceeded the high-temperature limit and the safety stat tripped. | Restricted water flow, failing circulator, stuck zone valves, or heat exchanger scale buildup. | No — identify and correct flow restriction before resetting. Repeated E14 causes heat exchanger damage. | High |
| E16 | Flue / Exhaust Abnormality | The boiler detected abnormal conditions in the exhaust flue circuit. | Blocked horizontal flue termination, disconnected or damaged exhaust pipe, or failed exhaust temp sensor. | Partial — visually inspect the flue termination cap outside for blockage. Internal inspection requires a technician. | High |
| E59 | Gas Valve Fault | The gas valve has failed to respond as expected during ignition or operation. | Gas valve solenoid failure, wiring fault to valve, or gas valve blocked by debris. | No — gas valve work requires a licensed gas fitter. | High |
| E61 | Fan Motor Fault | The combustion fan motor is not reaching required speed or has stalled. | Fan bearing wear, obstructed fan wheel, or failed motor capacitor. | No — fan motor inspection and replacement requires a technician. | High |
| E64 | Heat Exchanger Issue | The boiler has detected an abnormal condition associated with the heat exchanger. | Significant scale buildup reducing thermal transfer, partial blockage, or early-stage cracking. | No — requires internal inspection and possibly descaling or heat exchanger replacement. | High |
| E72 | Flow Sensor Fault | The domestic hot water or system flow sensor is not reading correctly. | Fouled sensor paddle, debris blockage at sensor, or sensor failure. | No — sensor inspection and replacement required. | Moderate |
| E76 | Water Temperature Sensor Fault | The water temperature sensor is reading outside the expected range. | Sensor failure, wiring fault, or actual extreme water temperature condition. | No — requires sensor resistance test and comparison against Noritz specifications. | Moderate |
| E79 | Pressure Switch Fault | The air pressure differential switch did not open or close as expected. | Blocked condensate drain affecting pressure balance, failed switch, or wiring issue. | Partial — check condensate drain for blockage. Technician required if condensate path is clear. | Moderate to High |
| E90 | Exhaust Temperature Too High | Flue gas temperature at the exhaust sensor exceeds the normal operating range. | Heat exchanger scaling causing reduced thermal efficiency, condensing function loss, or combustion tuning issue. | No — combustion analysis and heat exchanger inspection required. | Moderate |
