Outdoor Reset Control Explained

Outdoor reset matches your boiler’s water temperature to the weather, boosting comfort and efficiency. Here is how the reset curve works.

How It Works 5 min read

A boiler does not have to run at full temperature all winter. Outdoor reset is a control strategy that lowers the water temperature on milder days and raises it as it gets colder — keeping your home comfortable while squeezing more efficiency out of a condensing boiler.

The reset curve

An outdoor sensor feeds temperature to the boiler control, which follows a "reset curve": when it is mild outside, the boiler targets a lower supply temperature; when it is bitterly cold, it targets a higher one. The home loses heat at a rate that tracks outdoor temperature, so matching supply temperature to it keeps rooms steady.

Why it improves efficiency

Condensing boilers are most efficient when their return water is cool enough to condense flue gases. Lower supply temperatures on mild days mean cooler returns, more condensing, and less fuel burned. It also reduces temperature swings and short cycling.

Comfort benefits

  • Gentler, more even heat instead of blast-then-coast cycles.
  • Fewer noticeable temperature swings between cycles.
  • Quieter operation and less wear from frequent firing.

Key takeaways

  • Outdoor reset lowers water temperature on mild days and raises it in the cold.
  • Cooler return water means more condensing and lower fuel bills on a condensing boiler.
  • It also delivers steadier comfort and less short cycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does outdoor reset really save money?

On a condensing boiler, yes — running cooler water more of the time keeps the unit in its efficient condensing range. The exact saving depends on your home and how the curve is tuned, which is why proper commissioning matters.

My boiler has an outdoor sensor — is reset already on?

Not always. The sensor has to be wired, enabled and the reset curve tuned to your home. Many boilers ship with reset available but not optimally configured, so it is worth confirming during a service.
