Gas Line & Meter Upgrades for Boilers

A bigger or higher-output boiler can need a larger gas line or meter. When that comes up, why it matters, and who handles it in BC.

Sometimes a boiler upgrade involves more than the boiler. If you move to a higher-output unit, add a combi’s big instantaneous hot-water demand, or combine appliances, the existing gas line or meter may not be able to supply enough gas. This guide explains when that comes up and how it is handled.

This is not a DIY job. In British Columbia, work on gas appliances must be performed by a licensed gas fitter. Never attempt gas, combustion or safety-control work yourself — if you smell gas, leave the building and call 911 or FortisBC at 1-800-663-9911 from outside.

Why gas supply can be a limiting factor

Every gas appliance needs a certain volume of gas at the right pressure. A gas line that comfortably fed an old boiler may be undersized for a high-output modern unit — especially a combi that briefly demands a lot of gas to heat water on the fly. Starve it and combustion suffers.

When an upgrade is needed

  • Moving to a significantly higher-output boiler.
  • Adding a combi with high instantaneous hot-water demand.
  • Several gas appliances sharing a line that is now at its limit.
  • A long pipe run where pressure drop becomes significant.

Who does the work

Sizing and upgrading the gas line is licensed gas-fitter work, done under permit. If the meter itself needs upgrading, that involves the utility (FortisBC). A good contractor checks gas supply during the quote so there are no surprises mid-installation.

Key takeaways

  • A higher-output or combi boiler can outstrip an older, undersized gas line.
  • Insufficient gas supply causes poor, unsafe combustion — it must be sized correctly.
  • Line work is licensed and permitted; meter upgrades involve FortisBC.

Frequently asked questions

Will I need a bigger gas line for a new boiler?

Not always — but a higher-output or combi boiler can require it. A licensed contractor calculates the gas load and pipe sizing during the quote. If the line or meter is undersized, upgrading it is part of a safe, code-compliant installation.
