Bosch Boiler Repair in Metro Vancouver

Certified repair for Bosch Greentherm and Greenstar condensing boilers. EA fault codes, ignition lockout, and heat exchanger issues resolved by Red Seal–certified technicians.

About Bosch Boilers

Bosch is a German engineering conglomerate with roots dating back to 1886. Their heating division produces condensing boilers and combination appliances distributed globally under the Bosch brand and in some markets as Worcester Bosch. In the Canadian market, Bosch is best known for the Greentherm and Greenstar series of wall-mounted condensing appliances.

The Bosch Greentherm C 950 ES and the Greenstar series are their primary condensing boiler and combi-boiler offerings for the residential BC market. These units operate at up to 96–98% thermal efficiency and feature modulating burners that adjust output to match heating demand — reducing short-cycling and improving comfort in zoned hydronic systems common to Metro Vancouver.

It is worth noting that Bosch and Worcester Bosch share several platform components. Technicians familiar with the Greenstar controls architecture can work across both brands, and some Bosch-marked parts are interchangeable with Worcester Bosch equivalents in the same product generation — a practical advantage when sourcing parts quickly in BC.

Common Bosch Repair Issues in Metro Vancouver

Bosch condensing boilers use an alphanumeric fault code system. The five issues we most frequently address on Bosch service calls in Greater Vancouver are:

  • Ignition Lockout (EA Codes):The EA-series fault codes (EA 224, EA 227, EA 229) all relate to ignition or flame failure. A failed igniter electrode, a blocked or partially closed gas valve, or low gas pressure at the appliance inlet are the most common physical causes. In Vancouver's cooler months, thermal expansion of the flue system can occasionally shift an exhaust connection enough to cause combustion air dilution and trigger lockout.
  • EA Fault Codes (Broader): Beyond ignition-specific EAs, Bosch EA codes span a range of combustion and safety faults. EA 338 (safety chain open) is triggered when one of the safety limits — overheat stat, pressure switch, or low-water cutoff — interrupts the control circuit. Diagnosing EA 338 requires systematically testing each safety component rather than replacing the control board.
  • Circulation Pump Failure: Bosch integrates a variable-speed pump in the Greentherm and Greenstar platforms. Pump impeller seizure — particularly in units that have been off all summer — is a common autumn service call. Symptoms include no heat distribution, unusual pump noises at startup, or an immediate lockout due to low-flow detection.
  • Flow Sensor Faults: The DHW flow sensor in combination units detects hot water draw. Lime deposits on the sensor paddle (common in Surrey and Langley water zones) reduce flow sensor sensitivity, resulting in delayed hot water response or no hot water output from an otherwise functional boiler.
  • Heat Exchanger Scaling:Bosch's aluminium primary heat exchangers are lightweight and efficient but require periodic descaling in BC's moderately hard water areas. Left untreated, scale reduces thermal transfer, increases outlet temperature, and eventually triggers high-limit safety shutdowns.

Our Bosch Service Credentials

Our Red Seal Gas Fitter–certified technicians have serviced Bosch Greentherm and Greenstar units across Metro Vancouver including North Shore properties, Burnaby strata complexes, and Richmond residential installations. We carry Bosch-compatible igniter assemblies, gas valve repair kits, flow sensor units, and pump cartridges on our service trucks.

We use digital combustion analyzers on all Bosch repairs to verify CO, CO2, and flue temperature post-repair — ensuring the unit is burning cleanly within Bosch's specified parameters before we close out the job.

Bosch Repair Cost in BC

A flat diagnostic fee applies to all service calls and is credited toward the repair. Common Bosch repair cost ranges in BC: igniter/electrode replacement is $175–$300 CAD. Gas valve replacement runs $400–$620 CAD. Circulation pump cartridge replacement is $270–$440 CAD. Flow sensor replacement is $155–$260 CAD. Heat exchanger descaling is $220–$340 CAD.

For Bosch units over 15 years old, we provide an honest repair-versus-replace assessment before proceeding with costly component replacements.
