Diagnostic Service Call
Most HVAC contractors in BC charge $150-$250 for a diagnostic visit (60-90 minutes), including locating the leak source, identifying the problem, and providing a written repair estimate. The diagnostic fee is sometimes waived or credited toward repair cost if you proceed with the work the same day. Some contractors offer free phone diagnostics over the phone first to determine if an in-home visit is warranted.
Simple Repairs ($100-$300)
Quick fixes requiring minimal parts: tightening a visibly loose fitting ($0 if DIY with an adjustable wrench, $75-$100 if technician-assisted), replacing a drain plug gasket ($100-$150), replacing an O-ring seal at a connection ($75-$125), flushing a clogged condensate line by hand ($100-$200). These typically take 15-30 minutes.
Component Replacements ($300-$800)
Relief valve replacement ($200-$400), automatic feed valve replacement ($150-$300), expansion tank replacement ($300-$600), section of corroded piping replacement ($200-$400), condensate line replacement ($200-$500), drain valve replacement ($100-$250), gasket or seal kit replacement ($150-$300). These take 45-120 minutes and require parts.
Major Multi-Component Repairs ($800-$2,500)
Water softener installation to prevent future hard-water leaks ($800-$1,500 total), full system flush and descale ($300-$600), boiler system re-piping (new supply/return lines) ($1,000-$2,000), combination repairs such as new relief valve + expansion tank + system flush ($800-$1,500 combined).
Tank Replacement ($2,500-$6,000+)
If the boiler tank develops a seam leak, pinhole rust-through, or internal corrosion, the entire boiler unit must be replaced. Cost breakdown: new boiler unit ($1,500-$3,500), labor for installation and system integration ($500-$1,500), piping modifications and venting adjustments ($200-$500), municipal permit and inspection ($100-$300), system commission (filling, bleeding, testing, tuning) ($200-$400). Total: $2,500-$6,500 depending on boiler efficiency level and piping complexity. High-efficiency or combi boilers are on the higher end. Installation typically takes 1-2 days.
